Individualism, economic freedom, and charitable giving

We investigate the role of individualistic social rules and norms in charitable giving. Individualism market societies is often criticized as corrupting morality discouraging contest that view. propose direct indirect mechanisms through which individualism increases charity. In channel, encourages self-interested contributes to charity by reinforcing economic freedom. use evidence from a large cross-section countries several measures both channels. Our empirical findings confirm each channel support insights classical liberals, such Adam Smith David Hume, more recent studies humanomics tradition, recovers argument has its virtues.
